Plantar Fasciitis

Symptoms
Plantar fasciitis commonly causes a stabbing pain in the heel of the foot, which is worse during the first few steps of the day after awakening. As you continue to walk on the affected foot, the pain gradually lessens. Usually, only one foot is affected, but it can occur in both feet simultaneously.

Diagnosis
To diagnose plantar fasciitis, your chiropractic doctor will physically examine your foot by testing your reflexes, balance, coordination, muscle strength, and muscle tone. Your doctor may also advise a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or X-ray to rule out other others sources of your pain, such as a pinched nerve, stress fracture, or bone spur.

How can Chiropractic Help with Plantar Fasciitis?

Chiropractic physicians are trained to evaluate foot alignment and to adjust the bones of your ankle, foot and toes. Ask Dr Kennedy to look at your feet, your shoes, and how you stand, walk, and run. Even misalignment of the hips and knees can trigger or complicate the symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Dr. Kennedy can evaluate these areas of the bony structures as well.

Tri-County Chiropractic also incorporates massage therapy into our treatments for plantar fasciitis.  Trigger point therapy can be applied by using deep finger pressure on the fascia, Achilles heel, and calf muscles.  This helps to increase blood flow to the affected area and release muscular adhesions. Deep tissue massage of the calves, heel and sole of the foot can help to release the muscle tension and break up scar tissue.  The muscle fibers can be followed or pressure can be applied across tendons depending on the patients comfort level.

Kinesiotaping is another treatment option used in our office to provide relief from plantar fascial pain and inflamation.  The thin, stretchy tape provides comfortable support without restricting range of motion. When applied to the skin over an injury, it interacts with both the nervous system to provide rapid pain relief and the lymphatic system to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Stretching your plantar fasciitis is something you can do at home to relieve pain and speed healing. Ice massage performed three to four times per day in 15 to 20 minute intervals is also something you can do to reduce inflammation and pain. Placing arch supports in your shoes absorbs shock and takes pressure off the plantar fascia. Chiropractors are trained to help you with proper foot supports. In addition to adding these home therapies to help resolve your condition and maximize your results from the chiropractic care, there are even natural supplements that can help reduce pain and inflammation while the body is healing. Your chiropractor can advise you in all these adjunctive relieving approaches.
